History of Zack's

Photograph of Bar circa 1896Zack’s is located in the historic district of Hoboken. The building was constructed in the late 1880’s and originally housed a local grocery store that catered to immigrants from Germany, England and Italy.

When the commercial property was converted to a tavern in 1892, the current mahogany and oak bar was installed. The same bar where many a seamen or merchant marine stopped for a drink and a chat on their way home or to a room in one of the local boarding houses.

The dining room was renovated in the fall of 2007 with banquets along the walls covered in rich green leather and boucle tapestry. The center of the room is now separated by an antique mahogany table with an ever changing motif of fresh flowers, candles and charming bric-a-brac.

On the walls of both the bar and dining room, hang street and river scenes from a bygone era when local transportation was by horse and buggy or the electrified tram system.

Who We Are

Zack’s Oak Bar & Restaurant is a family business that opened in the spring of 1996. We are two local married couples, Sheila & Mark Nisler and Amelia & Gerry Farrelly. The bar bears Mark’s middle name and is the third of three successful bars & restaurants we opened and managed in Hoboken.

In 1993, our first venture, Ted and Jo’s Oak Bar & Restaurant, named after Gerry’s parents opened in Hoboken. TJ’s Trout and Ale opened in the same year and was the only restaurant in town to specialize in serving a fresh seafood menu.

Gerry has over 30 years experience in the food and catering industry while Mark who was born and raised in Hoboken has more than 18 years experience in food and bar service.

In Zack's we have no doubt that we have successfully realized our ambition, which was to create a neighborhood restaurant in the classic American sense where friends and neighbors could meet and always find a friendly face and a warm smile.
